We're in South Carolina

We blog Republican politics so we figured why not go and see some Republican presidential politics first hand. We arrived here in the Palmetto State on Thursday to go to the much hyped Presidential Campaign Rally hosted by the Aiken County GOP and held at the USC Aiken Convocation Center. We thought this would be a great event considering the Aiken County Republicans were running advertisements that said all the candidates were coming. Unfortunately, only three showed, Dr. Hugh Cort, Cap Fendig (a county commissioner from Georgia) and Congressman Ron Paul. Every other candidate sent surrogates to speak on their behalf, as each surrogate spoke that candidate's supporters left the hall. After Congressman Paul spoke then it was Cort and Fendig, we felt sorry for these guys because the hall just about emptied for them.

Actually hearing Cort speak was disappointing. The guy bills himself as a counterterrorism expert, and maybe he is, but when you give a doom and gloom speech about how Osama bin Laden is going to blow us all up you'd better give us some solutions. In other words tell us how we can prevent these attacks you claim are coming. His only solution was General Thomas McInerney's plan for the Middle-East which, according to Cort's version of the plan is to attack Iran.

As to Fendig, he offered up pretty much nothing more than the Party's talking points. That's fine for a front-runner but if you're a fringe candidate you should offer something bold to get a little attention.

On Friday we didn't do much, mostly sight seeing. And now, today is election day and we're in the upstate where, based upon the six polling places in and around Greenville, we've visited turn-out appears to be somewhat light. We're guessing the light turn-out is due to the snow. These folks certainly don't seem to know what to do with snow falling.

Most of the folks we've talked to tell us they've voted for Huckabee but Romney is close and nipping at his heals. We'll have to wait to see what happens just like you.
