Thompson gets to debate, two hard workers get to sit on the sidelines again

Tomorrow night MSNBC will host a GOP presidential debate in Dearborn, MI and Fred Thompson will be included. We agree, the man should be in the debate, and hopefully he will fall flat on his face so everyone can see him for what he is, a flip-flopper with very little understanding of the issues.

Now having said that we agree Thompson should be in the debate, we also believe two other candidates who have been running longer than Mr. Thompson should be afforded the same opportunity to fall on their faces. Businessman John Cox of Illinois and counter-terrorism expert Dr. Hugh Cort of Alabama both should be given the same opportunity as Thompson. Why not? They have been running. Both spoke at the Texas straw poll and sounded decent. Well, Cox's delivery was much more polished than Cort's. In fact, in South Carolina at the Palmetto Family Council's straw poll Dr. Cort showed his lack of understanding of the process when the crowd loudly applauded during his speech and he asked that they remain silent until the end because he had only seven minutes to speak. The man may not be a great orator but every person we spoke with who has heard Cort speak tells us he is sincere and that his message needs to be heard by Americans.

So, once again we say let's let those who are actually participating in the process participate.

Sigh. Once again you're pining for the fringe candidates to get into the debates. These two guys, while sincere, are not of the caliber of the others - even Fred T., who is dull as dry paste, but at least he's been elected to *something* and understand the political process (I hope.)

Cox, and to a lesser extent, Cort, are far out of the loop, are extremely naive (as your "no applause" comment illustrated) and frankly are a waste of time. Why on EARTH would we want to be ADDING people to debates at this point?

If anything we should be cutting Hunter, Tancredo, Paul and Brownback. None of them are adding to the debates at this point and while some have merit, they don't really have the money or support to defeat the frontrunners -- or Hillary. And winning is what it's all about now.

If Cox has 100 supporters in this country, or if Cort has 10, I'd be very surprised.

Perhaps if all the other candidates didn't suck we wouldn't have to look at third-tier or longshot candidates. Having said that, we totally disagree with cutting Paul. We disagree with his stance on the war but it is good to have a contrasting view.

Besides, the only way we get any comments is by writing something nice about Cox. But, remember this, we're guys so we don't like Cox (pun intended).

        First, kudos on the pun

Second, I agree somewhat that Paul brings a different view, but come on, he's the GOP version of Lyndon Larouche. His band of nutjob followers believe in every conspiracy theory ever devised. Many are outright anarchists, and proud of it.

Third, I wish some of the third tier candidates had caught fire. I really do. But they didn't. Huckabee has a chance to rise and defeat a couple of top tier guys (lackluster Fred and Juan McKennedy, perhaps) and he can appeal to the center and to evangelicals. If they bolt the party if it goes with a Guiliani-McCain ticket, the GOP is doomed.
