Last night's debate - let the other two in

Fox News reports "The Republican presidential nominating contest took on a new shape Thursday with an additional candidate in the race and new life injected into a suffering campaign following a praiseworthy showing at a primary debate in New Hampshire."

Frankly we think the nominating contest would really take on a new shape if all the hardworking candidates were included. Unfortunately, no one seems to think millionaire businessman John Cox and counter-terrorism expert Dr. Hugh Cort are worthy of being included in the debates. Both have campaign organizations. Both have been campaigning in the early states, Cox in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina and Cort apparently is skipping New Hampshire but has been seen in several other states.

Both candidates have done well in small straw polls with Cox taking a bunch of second, third and fourth places and Cort actually winning a straw poll in Rhode Island.

Seriously neither one of these guys is likely to win the nomination but they could have a lot to add to the debates. Cox could bring some good arguments about taxes considering he is a CPA. Cort would probably be far more exciting as his bomb the hell out of Iran and win the war talk would provide some fireworks with Congressman Ron Paul. We heard that at the Texas straw poll one of Paul's supporters was escorted out of the hall as Cort spoke about winning the war and preventing future attacks on America by Osama bin Laden.

Gary Bauer was included in 2000. Why not these guys?

The state Republican Party chairman of New Hampshire, Fergus Cullen, put it best when asked why Cox wasn't in the debate: "Hard work alone is not enough to give someone free national TV time. John needs to demonstrate an ability to persuade individuals to support him."

Gary Bauer was spokesman for a powerful Christian Conservative group who was known nationwide. He was a poor candidate, but had earned his right to be on the stage because of his work and his notoriety.

Cox and Cort are not known outside their own hometowns and are simply seeking notoriety by running for office. Neither the media nor the voters reward this behavior with electoral success.
